Susan married Newel JOHNSTON-4372, son of James H JOHNSTON-18566 and Aseneath VAN OSTRAND-18565, on 13 Nov 1862 in Randolph, NY. Newel was born 8 Jan 1834 in Harmony twp., Chautauqua County, NY. He died 29 Sep 1908 in Ashville, NY and was buried 1908 in Magnolia Cemetery, Ashville, NY.

Newel 1900 Harmony twp., Chautauqua County, NY.

In the 1880 census for Shellrock twp., Butler County, Newel is recorded as living in the household of his brother Edward but his wife, Susan was not listed.  According to various records, Newel's son Fred was born in Shellrock on March 18, 1871 so the couple must have been there after the 1870 census was recorded.  Pension records for Newel indicate that he first filed for a veterans pension on May 22, 1878 while living in Butler County IA  It was filed on the basis of a medical disabiliity discharge from the Union Army dated May 22, 1862.  His pension records further show that he left Shellrock, IA in Nov. 1881 to take up residence in Chautauqua County, NY, and died September 29, 1908 in Harmony twp., NY.  He had married Susan Hinman November 13, 1862 and remained thusly married until his death.  The couple had just one child, a son Fred.  All three are buried in Magnolia cemetery in Ashville, NY as is Susan's sister Julia Hinman Harvey.
The Declaration For Original Invalid Pension dated May 22, 1878 gives Newel's descriiption as: age 44, 5 feet 81/2 inches height;, complexion, light; hair, light; eyes, blue.  It also states that while on duty at Near Great Bethel in the state of Virginia on or about May 1862, he contracted; chronic diarrhea, rheumatism in legs and back, and chronic laryngitis all caused by exposure.  This declaration was filed in Shell Rock, Iowa and further notes that his place of residence since his date of discharge has been Iowa and other places.  According to the National Archives Records Service a post offfice was established in the town of Stow, Chautauqua county, NY on December 6, 1880 and Newel was the postmaster from April 7, 1884 until succeeded by Charles W. Slayton on May 21, 1892.  Apparently Newel had built and operated a store at Stow and which presumably also housed the post office.  It is recorded that he sold the store to Charles Slayton.

They had the following children:

5455 M i Fred JOHNSTON-4362 was born 18 Mar 1871 in Shellrock, IA. He died 28 Mar 1950 in Ashville, NY.

Fred was counted in a census BET. 1910 - 1920 in LwhmiHt, C, then with Clayton White the rest of his life..

Fred is mentioned several times in a publication entitled, The History of North Harmony.
It is noted that he had worked on the steamboat, City of Cleveland, when it was used as a passenger boat on lake Chautauqua and that he had administered to aged and sick neighbors as well as two of his elderly grandaunts.  He was apparently a good friend of Mr. Clayton White and after his mother passed away, Fred lived with Mr. White and died at his residence in 1950.  Clayton was quoted as saying that he and Fred had worked together on the old City of Cleveland and that Fred had a keen sense of humor, was a master-craftsman, did carpenter work of the first order, and was an expert horseman. As to character, Clayton said that Fred was reliable to the nth degree and his dependability was an outstanding characteristic.
